Can I buy a Christian bible at a normal bookstore, if so which is most recommended?

What Bible is best for a teenager who is Protestant-Christian? I'm new and trying to convert and learn more about God. Thankyou. Can I buy a Christian bible at a normal bookstore, if so which is most recommended?
Barnes and Nobles has a lot of bibles. Christians like the King James and the more modern Standard American.

If you want a Torah, try the Stone edition.
Good for you, Candi. I would like to encourage you to seek God in the one place where He may be found [beside the leading of the Holy Spirit] - the Bible.

I have many good English translations, and have been reading the word for close to 30 years now. I've been reading nothing but good things about the Holman Christian Standard Bible; some say its the best English translation available. Personally, I like the English Standard Version [also universally well regarded]; others include the New International Version, and the New American Standard Bible. I hope I'm not confusing you! The point is, there are a number of quite good ones to choose from, and you cant go wrong by using any one of the ones I've mentioned here.

If you can get one of these Bibles as a Schofield reference Bible, all the better. Can I buy a Christian bible at a normal bookstore, if so which is most recommended?
I have studied the King James Bible for many years and am aware of some of its weaknesses in translation. It is very good though and trusted by all evangelical leaders as having proper motive by the translators, accuracy being very important to them. The English is from 1600's. My favorite publisher is Nelson because the cross references are very relevant.

The American Standard Version used different manuscripts to translate which did not contain all of one of the gospels, I think Mark. In Theology school it was used as text, considered by the Southern Baptists to be the closest to modern day English and the original manuscripts. A copy would probably have to be ordered through a Christian bookstore.

The New American Standard Version is good and available in Christian Bookstores.

Avoid the New King James Version, the NIV, New International Version, and the Revised Standard Version. The New World Translation is not a true translation but a transliteration written to promote Russell's doctrines, inserting words that definitely change the true understanding.

The Living Bible is also a transliteration but is credible as a study guide.

Yes, bookstores do carry different versions of the Bible. You may want to ask the teens at your church which version they use before buying one. If they don't all use the same version, go to BibleGateWay and compare the versions they give you to see if you like one more than the other. If you want a good translation with good notes, I highly recommand the New Oxford Annotated Bible, New Revised Standard Version.

No other version has the quality of scholarship or ease of reading.

With this version, you also have some notes for your text to inform you, and there are several wonderful articles to help you get in much deeper details on the Bible.

Here's a place to pick up your choice at a bargain rate:

OK, your question gives pretty good details.

First, I don't agree with most of the recommendations in previous answers. Here (very briefly) is why:

King James Version

a) archaic language leads to misunderstanding

b) well-recognized inaccuracies due primarily to its age

The Message

a) paraphrase - which means that this is someone's explanation of what scripture says; not recommended for learning about Christianity, but recommended with reservations if very easy reading of the bible is your goal

New American Standard Bible

a) very literal word-for-word translation make this more difficult to read, and possibly less accurate (a well-known consequence of very literal translation). Extremely useful for original language word studies and very similar to the (also very literal) King James Version.

Amplified Bible

a) I consider this a faulty translation, inserting commentary and mistranslation within the text under the guise of expansive translation.

New Oxford Annotated NRSV

a) Though one of the best scholarly study bibles available - it is, in fact, one of the most scholarly study bibles available. Designed for a dedicated student of the bible. *If* scholarly bible study is your aim, a better version (in most ways) is the New Jerusalem Bible, Regular Edition.

NWT

a) This is the bible of the Jehovah's Witnesses and demonstrates a very strong bias in the translation (in support of their doctrines). A fine bible if you are a Witness or for use in scholarly study (with due attention to the bias)

NOW, here are *my* recommendations based on your needs

However, I would like to add one recommendation you should consider after reading that page: this bible seems like a *very* useful explanatory study bible. You can do the "look inside" and see how the notes do an excellent job of covering topics relating to the passage without veering off into preaching

If a preachy sort of bible is what you want (you know - one of those bibles that attempt to "relate" to teens by discussing dating and such things) - then pick your favorite version from my recommendations and look for a "teen" version.

Dear Candii,

B%26amp;N and borders have some for sure....

The king james version (older teen maybe) is awesome if you want to challenge your self with decoding and everything ... but for easier understanding and more thoughtful prayer type ... the Message is most definitely the one. I would personally go with the message^.^

Good Luck on your new journey with him! Enjoy it!

Much Love and Many Blessings,

Lord's Child

I use the KJV and use the two below links to assist me with it.

One site is actually the Old and New Testament read aloud for the KJV; the other is the amplified version in text to assist me when needing help with translating the KJV.

Hope that helps; God Bless!!
Yes, a Bible can be found almost in any book store or a place that sells books, even the local dollar store has them... I would recommend a Christian book store, for one reason, they would be able to advise or help you choose one that fits your needs... You need to take your time picking one out, look at them closely... When I first came to God I purchased a study Bible, I put it away quickly, it was NOT a true Word Bible.... go in peace...... God bless
You can buy one at Wal-Mart (always the lowest prices)... and then take note that they don't offer much of anything else that competes. How narrow minded can you get, eh? LOL

Ask them if you can order a copy of the Koran, or tell them you'd like a copy of Dawkin's book, The God Delusion. LOL

Wal-Mart... it's where diversified America shops.
I recommend obtaining a Bible that is in current English (some are in Olde English, %26amp; difficult to understand). Also, one that is a word-for-word translation, throughout. The one I prefer, is the NWT, which is online, at: http://watchtower.org/bible/index.htm

A printed copy is available at no charge (to those who agree to read it) at any Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses: http://jw-media.org/people/worship.htm

Several other Bibles are available to compare on-line, at:

There are many contrasting teachings about God, so I encourage you to check everything you read %26amp;/or hear, with what God's Word itself actually teaches:

"Make sure of all things; hold fast to what is right." --1Th 5:21
Hm.

I use the King James Version.

But you might like the Message. (I think it's geared towards teens.)

I'm not a protestant. So yeah...

Maybe that's not what the cool kids read these days? :]

P.S. How could anyone give this answer a thumbs down? Tst tst! =)
Protestant- Christian ? Well in that case any Bible will do. They are all full of errors, except the one true Bible of the Word of God.(The Catholic Bible). A Protestant would NEVER want that Bible.
Some book stores do carry them. I would suggest a study Bible of some kind, preferably written in regular english words rather than the beautiful but difficult to understand flowery words of the King James version.
Dear Candii,

Do ignore all the "fairy tale" advice...look out for NIV - New International Version. But a study Bible would be better - as it offers notes and interpretation to the verses.
there are 36 + bible versions and there are pretty much the same

but one stands out for me the companion bible because it got the best foot notes.
KJV Please!

many bibles are watered down because of copy write laws. The kjv is the only one that keeps God's truth the closest to the original.
A KJV can be picked up in most any bookstore.
I want to go an abnormal bookstore.
Some one asked that question of Edgar Cayce. His short answer was

"the one you will live."
Skip the King James Version. It's hard to read.

Look for the New International Version or Today's New International Version. Or the New Living Translation. All of those are easy to read.

If you find one that says "Study Bible", like "NIV Study Bible" or "NLT Study Bible" those are good because they have lots of notes that explain things that you might not understand on first reading.
buy the gnostic version, but if you want to know more about god then sit still quiet ur mind and you will tap into the god within you. books are only pointers that point back to you sweetie. the bible will only confuse you. trust me
uhh yea any regular bookstore should have them.

just look in the fiction category.
Then you start reading fairytale
Just have a look in the fiction section at your local book shop.
I'd recommend Borders. You can buy a coffee with your fiction.
