Yes, I know there are shreds of historical truth thrown into the christian bible for good measure. What I want to know is why a book that's essentially a crazy mix of history and fairy tales is considered non-fiction.Why is the christian bible in the non-fiction section of bookstores/libraries?
It must be just in teh area that you are.
EVERYWHERE else it's in an area that includes other religious texts and reference books.
The other point being that libraries file the fiction section in Alpha-Author sequence.
As you know, no one wrote bibel so it's be hard to file it it, yeah?
~
If there is not a specific Religion/Spirituality section, and all books are only divided into fiction and non-fiction, my first statement is that the bookstore might just have a less-than-useful system.
I would personally have Religion/Spirituality as a subsection of History. Not all histories are complete non-fiction. The Bible's impact on history is undeniable; although, those yahoo posters claiming that everything in the Bible has been shown to be true have either never read much of the book, or do not grasp the most basic notions of parable, oral tradition, translation, or history. Few Biblical literalists avoid shellfish, stone their neighbor to death for gathering sticks on the sabbath, or have their disobedient son stoned to death by the entire town. Divorcees and Takers of the Lord's Name, BEWARE!
Yahoo Answers is not the place to do this in depth. Several reasonable postulates were given as to why your local bookstore might do such a thing. Good luck in finding out more. Love your enemy as yourself. Why is the christian bible in the non-fiction section of bookstores/libraries?
Must be just where you live. Here, every religious text is in the religion section in book stores. Here in Utah, even the Book of Mormon is in the religion section and not the non-fiction. The only religious things that are in non-fiction are the biographies.
Or the reference section, in a library.
Remember, even if your denying atheist ways are right, (which they are not) everything in the Bible has been proven to have happened. Therefore, it is non-fiction.
Plus, atheists hardly make up four percent of the population. Do you really expect to have any influence on what is fiction and what is not?Why is the christian bible in the non-fiction section of bookstores/libraries?
Well, it certainly isn't fiction. Fiction is something written with the intent of being false. We can debate the accuracy of the Bible, but there's really not much evidence that it was deliberately created to be false.
And if it isn't fiction, it's by definition non-fiction. Non-fiction does not equal "true."
if its in the non fiction, its probably the personal interpreation of the store owner or manager to put it there!
its usually in the religion section at barnes and noble and other book stores.
i agree there might be some fictiononal and imagination to christianity. (as discussing the trinity) but its NOT ALL a hoax. and its not all a fairy tale or someones invention.
i am a witness of jesus christ. so i know there is a God and a saviour/Lord.
it is usually in the religious section of the library. History of course is not that easily learned and one almost has to put oneself in that place to get the true meaning of history. How would you be able to describe the holocaust from a Jewish point of view or a german point of view?
A true Librarian would classify the Bible as a Religious book and would place it in that section as it is in most libraries. To most of us it is not important where a book is stored provided that we can find it !
ALL religious texts appear in the non-fiction/religious section of bookstores and libraries.
Can you imagine the controversy and loss of business if a store decided to stock the Koran in the fiction section?
You've never been in a library, have you? 95% of libraries use the DDC, and the DDC doesn't have a "non-fiction" classification.
Havent you got better things to do, its not fairy tales its true
i know this might sound weird to you but God told me to tell you read
the bible and you will see
Because despite it's faults, it's a historical book. Shakespeare, Dante's Inferno and so on are all in the nonfiction section.
That's weird. In my bookstore, the Bible is in the Spirituality section, which is right next to the New Age section. :D
It's considered non-fiction in my library and I'm on the west coast. Religion is the 200 section of the Dewey-decimal system in non-fiction!
In my library, it's in the Religion section. Who cares? If you don't believe it, it's no big thing. I don't either. But to some people, Jesus Christ is a very real thing.
At my bookstores (Colorado) they put it in the Religions section which they don't really define one way or the other. It's not like it's Nonfiction: Religion.
Ooooh. . .Good one . . .
What a comedian.
My library isn't just divided into fiction and non-fiction. The Bible is in a religious section.
Maybe it's beacuase everything in the Bible has been proven by historians.
at my library in Georgia(Southern USA) its in the religion section or something like that
Uh in the borders near me, it's in the "religion" section.
I've never seen the Bible in the non-fiction section of any bookstore here.
It's because libraries and book stores tend to have a Religion section. Are all atheists this cerebral?
Peace
Oh, come on. you're just being disingenuous. You know very well why the Bible is in the non-fiction section. Don't waste our time.
Same reason I found War and Peace in the children's section. It was a mistake.
The Bible belongs in reference.
Take it upon yourself to move them to the proper place then.
I'm just stabbing in the dark but maybe because it's...NON-FICTION.
They meant to put it there. That's where it should be! =]
not here, might just be america... or your area
The Christian religion is real, isn't it? I mean, the stories and stuff in the bible are completely fantasy, but...people practice Christianity, right?
