I'm a Christian, so of course I don't mind being called what we call ourselves be that Christian or specifically Foursquare or Pentecostal. But there's no sign on my church that says "Church of Theism" and I've never heard a pastor talk about "theism" or seen a book about it in my church bookstore.Christians: Does it irk you when atheists call you "theists"?
Nothing atheists do irks me.
They're children. Treat them as such.
No. Although "theism" has been used in the past to describe specific types of theistic beliefs, I don't mind it. These days, it simply denotes a person who believes in deities (which I do) as opposed to someone who does not profess a belief in deities. It's a general term for someone (not necessarily a Christian) who believes in a deity (or deities). It doesn't bother me; I've often referred to myself in this forum as a theist.Christians: Does it irk you when atheists call you "theists"?
Newsflash: Christians are theists. If you have heard a Pastor talk about God, you have heard him discuss theism. Anyone who believes in deities is a theist.
Sadly, there is a widespread psychopathology, in that some people believe that all people who believe in theistic religions believe theirs. Thank you for illustrating the principle behind the title, "The God Delusion".
Considering christians ARE theists...
the路ism (thzm)
NOUN:
Belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in a personal God as creator and ruler of the world.Christians: Does it irk you when atheists call you "theists"?
When discussing belief in God in general its natural to use the broader term "theist" which includes christians, jews, muslims and lots of others. There's nothing insulting in that.
'Theism' is defined as belief in god. It's just a word. Are you guys going to try to redefine that too along with 'atheism,' 'religion,' and 'scientific theory?'
It shouldn't, because it's true.
The a part of the word means not, or without.
Theism is to worship something or someone or many things or many someones.
A-Theist means without or not worshiping something.
Geddit?
Aww poor baby we acknowledge that not all those who believe in a deity are Christians and that hurts your little feelings.
Here I hope this makes you feel a little less "left out"

Do you get offended when someone calls you a man instead of by your actual name?
Why don't you pick up a dictionary and look up the word theist. That you get offended or "irk'd" by it is pathetic.
i don't go to church.. but i'm a christian- in the terms i try to follow the teaching of christ.
churchs have their own agenda - i don't need someone to translate the bible for me.
Nope. A rose is a rose is a rose. That which we call a rose by any other name woud smell as sweet. I'm saved and that's what matters.
You are a theist. Luckly for you Theism isn't a religion. You're a christian who practices theistic beliefs. Use a dictionary man. Geez.
If you believe in a god then you're a theist, it's as simple as that. It's just the correct word, your pet peeve means nothing.
We're not just calling YOU specifically theists. We're talking about religions that believe in god/gods/godesses/etc.
FYI: Theism encompasses all those who believe there is a god. Not just Christians.
If you have a problem with definitions, take it up with Webster.
Nope. It's accurate.
They're talking to, Christians, Muslims, Jews and Pagans that believe in gods all at the same time when they say "theists".
No. It's just a label... not specifically about Christianity.
Theist: Anyone that believes in some sort of deity. So that would include you and every other religious person on Earth.
A theist is a person who believes in a god or gods. Why would it be offensive? Are you a Christian who doesn't believe in God?
What do they know and who cares. Happy New Year. Peace
It means "believer in God". Would you prefer that combination of words?
I don't really mind.
It's not like being called a theist is a grave insult or something.
I think Christians are fideists
Nope, don't bother me.
They thought hard enough to give us a name, that's not like theirs.
Nah.
From the outside looking in, they won't distinguish more than that.
It's ok... I'm a theist... I love God.
Never heard that one.
Thanks for the tip, theist.
I love it!
That's kind of what you are.
No, I AM a theist. Aren't you?
