I just had a book published. I have a ton of printed-up postcards to send out to promote the book. Please give me some suggestions of SPECIFIC places to mail these postcards----such as bookstores, churches (the book has a bit of a Christian theme), organizations, reviewers, papers, libraries, etc....
(PS--Listing physical mailing addresses would be great!)
Thanks for your help!Suggestions For Places To Mail Book Promotion?
First of all, congratulations!
In promoting a book, a website is actually a great tool to have. It allows you to update info on book signings, reviews, where the book can be bought, etc. Email blasts to interested parities may carry more weight these days than postcards. I'll assume for now that you do have a website and that the URL has been printed on the cards.
Not knowing what's on the card, you need to decide whether these postcards are to get people to sell the book for you, or are they actually directed towards consumers - the actual end users.
Purely informational cards can be sent to interested churches and church organizations. For churches where you have existing relationships, you may want to ask if you can drop off a handful of cards that they can have handy at their office for people to take (saves postage and is self selecting - those that are interested will avail themselves of the cards).
Bookstores may not be swayed much by a card as much as a hard copy to read and decide whether they wish to carry your title. That said, you may want to have cards available at bookstores that agree to carry the book - think of it as in-store promotion.
The same goes for reviewers, periodicals, etc. They tend to work off of review copies that come with press releases versus just postcards. Reviewers do you a favor by reviewing your book, so they are not likely to go purchase a copy.
Since libraries purchase very limited numbers of copies, and usually at the wholesale price, I don't think that the effort is worth the return you'd potentially get. Many librarians trust review periodicals for leads on titles anyhow.
I'd definitely send the cards thought to friends, family and and mailing list that you may have put together of people interested in your topic. Also, encourage them to spread the word about your book - word of mouth endorsements are one of the best selling tools, period!
Other things to do include ensuring that you can sell your book on Amazon.com and if you've self-published, explore PMA, the Publisher's Marketing Association: http://www.pma-online.org. They are an incredible resource for small publishers and have a lot of people who have gone through what you are going through and can be a most valuable resource.
Finally, Publisher's Weekly is the trade journal of record for the book industry. There are many resources listed on their website: http://www.publishersweekly.com.
Good luck!Suggestions For Places To Mail Book Promotion?
I would suggest that you first of all send out a press release to your local TV, Radio and Newspapers as a special interest. Also release it on PRWeb.com
Libraries no good as they will only buy one of your books.
Try leaving some in coffee bars, resturants, hairdressers etc. Anywhere where people have a little time to stop and think.
Also contact local book stores and offer to do a signing for them. Good publicity for them and you.
Could do the same at your local church groups or maybe give a talk on the book at a local church club.Suggestions For Places To Mail Book Promotion?
