How to handle this situation... manager is lying about me?

How should I handle this situation?

I'm a married college senior. I worked at a *Christian* bookstore for seventeen months (Nov. 2006- April 2008). My husband (who's 4 years older than me) has a job that pays enough to cover all our bills and all w/o me working, so I quit. I wrote a very polite letter of resignation, thanking the manager for giving me the opportunity to work there, explaining why I felt it was time to leave, and offering to find a replacement employee for myself. The reason I wrote a letter instead of doing it in person is because I told the manager I wanted to quit two times before and he talked me into staying both times. I wanted to be done this time. I let the assistant manager and two employees (including my brother) read the letter before I put it on the manager's desk. I made a copy and still have the original letter saved on my computer. The letter included my two-weeks notice. When I went in the next day to work, everyone was like, "Why are you here? George took you off the schedule."... And my brother called me later and said that George said I was "no call, no show".

Anyway, he's telling people that I was fired! A former co-worker of mine asked him if he needed any extra help around Christmas and he said he wouldn't hire me back because I "was terminated because of how [I] left".

How should I handle this? Should I go to Corporate? Should I just call the area manager and tell him? Should I go talk to the manager (George)? He's lied in the past. I'd hate to waste my breath with him and then he'll make up another story. I'm just so mad about this! Anywhere I apply for a job in the future will call the bookstore and he'll say "she was fired" when that's simply untrue. What should I do?How to handle this situation... manager is lying about me?
Pink,

There is an article on the Wall Street Journal online that talks about your situation. Take a look at it and then decide your course of action.

I think I would call the area manager and ask for a face-to-face meeting. Read the article and then decide.

All the best.
