How should I handle this situation?
I'm a married college senior. I worked at a *Christian* bookstore for seventeen months (Nov. 2006- April 2008). My husband (who's 4 years older than me) has a job that pays enough to cover all our bills and all w/o me working, so I quit. I wrote a very polite letter of resignation, thanking the manager for giving me the opportunity to work there, explaining why I felt it was time to leave, and offering to find a replacement employee for myself. The reason I wrote a letter instead of doing it in person is because I told the manager I wanted to quit two times before and he talked me into staying both times. I wanted to be done this time. I let the assistant manager and two employees (including my brother) read the letter before I put it on the manager's desk. I made a copy and still have the original letter saved on my computer. The letter included my two-weeks notice. When I went in the next day to work, everyone was like, "Why are you here? George took you off the schedule."... And my brother called me later and said that George said I was "no call, no show".
Anyway, he's telling people that I was fired! A former co-worker of mine asked him if he needed any extra help around Christmas and he said he wouldn't hire me back because I "was terminated because of how [I] left".
How should I handle this? Should I go to Corporate? Should I just call the area manager and tell him? Should I go talk to the manager (George)? He's lied in the past. I'd hate to waste my breath with him and then he'll make up another story. I'm just so mad about this! Anywhere I apply for a job in the future will call the bookstore and he'll say "she was fired" when that's simply untrue. What should I do?Manager telling companies I've applied to that I was fired when I quit?
First off your question is misleading.. you state that he is telling companies you were fired when you quit.. but you state is he telling your friends and coworkers that.. you are AFRAID he will tell other companies that... not that he has.. this is very different..
have a friend he does not know call for a verification of employment as if they were the hiring manager of a place you might apply.. find out what he says... if he STATES you were fired then he is guilty of liable (or slander depending on what is said).. contact the corporate headquarters as that GREATLY exceeds what is is/is not allowed to do...
in all probability you will find that all he will provide is the dates/times you worked and if you are eligible for rehire.
LEGALLY that is all it is safe to provide anything else leaves you wide open for either liable or slander depending on what you say.
Can you feel the irony? lol "Christian" bookstore screwing you over. Sounds about right.Manager telling companies I've applied to that I was fired when I quit?
If he is a liar, then don't use him as a reference.
First of all it seems like maybe your manager is holding some kind of vendetta against which is biased and totally unfair to you. You can do a number of things such as talk to corporate and explain to them your former bosses actions against you. You could confront your boss and ask him why he acting in a unprofessional manner or just totally ignore the fact and move on with your life. Also if you were to apply for new job put down your former coworkers or other references.Manager telling companies I've applied to that I was fired when I quit?
I have to agree with the first post!! ~LOL~
if he was insisting you were fired - file for unemployment - that will teach him-
Go buy a tape recorder or digital voice recorder ($20-40) and place it up to the top of the phone, this way you can record both the former boss AND you talking in the phone.
Have a family member call this person, and act like they are calling him because he was listed as a reference.
Ask him why you no longer work there, and he will probably say that you were fired. Also have them try to fish out the reason why you were fired (allegedly).
Then take this to lawyer. They can't give out information to other people, especially if its wrong.
So if he's claiming you were fired, you could also claim unemploymet. He then can't say that you weren't fired if he already admitted it in a recording. If he wants to be a jerk then you be a jerk too.
