I am a Christian and consider myself a scientist. i picked up a copy at my local Christian bookstore too, really cheap, just want to see what all the fuss is about. Two or three chapters in, nothing big so far. Then I might go and read Dawkins' book 'the evidence for evolution'. All this is tempered with a couple of books on some Christian perspectives on science and why the universe is the way that it is (by Hugh Ross)Christians: How many of you have read Darwin's Origin of Species?
Well, Why Don't you watch This as well concerning that

"Perhaps that's why he doesn't address the question of abiogenesis in the book."
No, he doesn't address it because he had not been working on abiogenesis.
It's like an astronomer looking through a telescope making commentary on where the metal spars that made the telescope came from - has nothing to do with the act of astronomy and really doesn't affect it since those materials do indeed exist and it doesn't matter, for the purposes of astronomy or evolution, where the building blocks (such as they are) came from in terms of the argumentative scope of each.
Anyway, as for this:
"According to the preface, Darwin calls creation an act of God SEVEN times in the book."
He doesn't make that statement, never mind 7 times.
Might I suggest you read the origin of species from a source other than a christian book store to make sure that you are in fact reading an un-doctored version.Christians: How many of you have read Darwin's Origin of Species?
Yes I've read it. The first 60 pages or so is painfully dull research on finches beaks etc. I found the semantics regarding the term species difficult to understand and the problems he admits in the geological record remain. That being said in no way am I a young earth creationist, and I see nothing in the theory that is an offense to my faith. Strict literal interpretation of the creation narratives at the expense of legitimate sciences is a relatively new phenomenon in Christianity and has been frowned upon in the Church since St. Augustine wrote about it in the 5th century.
Keep in mind his book was ground breaking work for it's day and is valuable for that reason. It is not the latest most accepted view of evolution.
I find the bible a fascinating book for many of the same reasons. It clearly represents the start of something that is a big part of our society. I also do not view it as currently valid theory. and that's the difference. Science has moved on from Darwin. Christianity is stuck.Christians: How many of you have read Darwin's Origin of Species?
As a scientist you might want to check out the author whose last name is Gish. I've read some synopsis of his work. He is in contact with many scientists too and has a alot of information for your field. Gish is very interesting. No, I didn't read Darwin and never had a desire to do so.
You point is well taken.
Yea, Darwin wasn't an atheist. You don't have to be an atheist to understand evolution... just literate and capable of learning. I should probably throw "willing" to learn in there too.
The fuss is about how understanding evolution has changed the way we look at things scientifically, in vast and important ways, and Darwin and his observations/work were a significant part of that process.
You like science right? Then why are you reading Origin of Species? Charles Darwin was not only NOT a scientist, but he never received any special training or education in science. Don't believe me? Look it up.
Yes. I became a creationist after reading it.
I'm Dilbert.
Yep it's a riot.
Darwin's book is old. Nothing about genetics, plate tectonics, ect. It's interesting from a historical standpoint, but we've learned a lot more since his time.
His book was only controversial because it was written for the popular press. Darwin was not the first person to propose evolution and common descent. He wasn't even the first to propose natural selection. He just wrote a book everyone could read and understand.
Also note, Duane Gish is a pathological liar. The "Gish gallop" strategy is named after him, where a debater lies so much on so many varied topics, his opponent cannot respond to everything. Basically bury them in BS.
